I’m a big advocate of homegrown restaurants so it’s very exciting when one comes along that is so well-refined in its concept and delivers quality, delicious food in a casual set-up. I spoke to a few people after my wonderful experience at Taste Kitchen last week and opinions varied. I for one, loved it and here’s why I think you should go check it out.
The restaurant is the brainchild of Albwardy Group (they own Spinneys supermarkets) in partnership with Nick Alvis and Scott Price, who both worked with Gordon Ramsay in a previous life and ran the award-winning ‘Table 9’ in Hilton Creek Deira.
Walking into the open plan space, the glass dome ceiling lets in natural light and almost gives you the feeling that you’re in glass house. Even though it’s located inside a mall, it hardly matters because it’s Mercato (could’ve been worse, guys! Think many parking levels where you cant find your car), and it’s bright, airy, and tastefully decorated.
The food is everything you’d expect from world-class chefs but with reasonable price tags. Needless to say, I was beaming with every bite and knew straight away this was something I had to share with all of you (and anyone else who will listen!)
The menu is concise and very well thought out. In addition to juices, they offer four options of flavoured water with a very important note on the back of the menu – that plain water is simply boring and so they’ve created some variations. I couldn’t agree more 🙂
We started off with a jug of lemon and ginger water for all of 12 AED! Other restaurants, please take note: Charging exorbitant amounts for a bottle of local water is unacceptable!
Warm, buttery, focaccia was then brought to the table. Tasted like savoury cake. Such a great start!
Red lentil, curry and coriander soup. Happiness in a bowl.
Beef short rib with the brightest, crunchy greens, ginger and star anise. Most tender meat I’ve ever eaten (thats quite a statement, folks) and every spoonful of the broth had me doing a happy dance.
Tomato, basil and mozzarella pizza.
The perfect end to the meal was THIS. Baked chocolate mousse. Looks solid on top but you get your spoon in and its light, airy and has the consistency of a delicate chocolate fondant. The accompanying malt ice cream was a winner!
Service was fantastic – friendly and professional. So many people get this wrong but not here.
Taste Kitchen has just opened its second branch in Silicon Oasis and another one is opening up in Karama real soon (Spinneys next to Bur Juman). How exciting! Knowing that fresh, wholesome and tasty food is just around the corner is pretty swell! Can’t wait!
