There’s Tex-Mex cuisine. And there’s Mexican fast-food. And then there’s real Mexican food. Or so I’d been told. For the longest time, I didn’t know there was a difference. I just knew that it was all very tasty. But as I made friends that know the cuisine first hand, I’ve learnt that there is in fact, a world of a difference. And the more I know, the more I realise that it isn’t super easy to find authentic Mexican food in Dubai.
Enter La Tablita – a place where all your taco and ceviche dreams come true. La Tablita is a new Mexican restaurant located in the also new, Hyatt Regency Dubai Creek Heights. It is a casual concept run by native Mexicans who have tried to bring an authentic taquería i.e. taco shop experience to Dubai. When we recently visited, we filmed a little video with the chefs, who told us a bit about the concept, the decor, and also showed us how to eat a taco the right way.
Haha! Aren’t they the best?!
The chefs have tried their best to keep the food fun, easy and true to Mexico. They pride themselves on serving the best tacos in town and do they?! We think so. We went to the media preview but have been back four times since; having tried a little bit of everything, its safe to say that its all quite delightful!
One must start with guacamole. Because it is only one of the best things ever made by man. La Tablita’s guac tastes fresh and perfectly seasoned.
They have an entire selection of ceviches.
Camaron which is basically a combo of prawn in coconut milk. I didn’t think something this simple could taste so good.
Vuelve a la vida – prawns, scallops, octopus and oysters. Check out the awesome modern presentation
Quesadillas con Tinga – Chicken
On to the tacos. Ready? There is a full taco menu with 16 options. We liked:
Champis. Mushrooms with a tomatillo salsa
Pescado. Is there anything better than fish tacos? I think not. These were perfect.
Barbacoa. Pulled lamb tacos. The meat is cooked for over 6 hours which is why they are nice and tender. They are flavoured with some Mexican spices, tomato and onion and then the taco is topped with a drizzle of lime and then a slaw which contains onions and tomatoes.
Tiger Prawns. These babies were grilled to perfection. Again – all you needed to do was squeeze some lime and you are set. So simple, so great!
Churros – these were super light, airy and crunchy, all at the same time. And a side of chocolate sauce always helps.
Tres Leches. The dessert of all dreams. Only to make this even better, it is served with a jalapeno ice cream and candied jalapenos on top. Seriously, who comes up with this amazing stuff?
So what are you waiting for to head on over? Ándale!
Tell us, what do you think of the Mexican food scene in Dubai, and do you prefer authentic or tex-mex?
